African Safari Experience 

Introduction

 

As pioneering as it is luxurious, Norman Carr Lodges offer premium accommodation over 6 camps, including the exquisite Chinzombo camp. 

 

The first safari camps of their kind developed in 1950 to offer viewing of the wildlife instead of hunting, and the first walking safaris. The Norman Carr Lodges offer the height of true safari combining tradition with innovation and development.

Generally spacious the safari accommodation has 2 x ¾ or 1 x king size bed with wardrobes and shelving. Each has comfortable seating indoor and/or outside. Rooms are en-suite, with the bush camps having private open air bathrooms. Staff accompany you to and from your room after dark lighting the route and watching for visiting wildlife. 

 

A laundry service is available at each camp and usually hand-wash and press your clothes same or next day. 

 

At Chinzombo electricity is relatively reliable and sockets are provided in room. The bush camps are solar powered to run the lighting and hot water; there are no charging points within the rooms, although a main charging area has points for small items like cameras and mobile phones. Truly a ‘getting back to the wild experience’. The remoteness of the bush camps means phone signal is not stable, nor is there any internet bringing the old explorer feel to the modern day traveller. 

 

Accommodation

Luwi Bush Camp 

An authentic and remote bush camp, Luwi is placed in the shade of huge mahogany trees, close to the permanent hippo and crocodile filled lagoon. Blessed with remote beauty, the camp is perfect for walking safaris. It offers 5 x grass, bamboo & thatch chalets, which are rebuilt each season using natural materials to blend into the bush. Whilst simple they are extremely comfortable with en-suite bathrooms with ‘all-day’ hot water. Meals are served under the shady trees or under the stars.

Nsolo Bush Camp 

Nsolo is a remote yet luxurious bush camp with stunning walking areas surrounding it. Four spacious chalets with raised decks and open air en-suite bathrooms create a unique ambience. Each chalet is solar powered and set under the shade of evergreen trees with private verandas. An open-sided shady chitjenie lounge and bush bar with dining area provides a peaceful refuge from where to watch the variety of wildlife visiting the Luwi riverbed.

Kakuli Bush Camp 

Known as the River Lodge, Kakuli Bush Camp is a tented camp with fantastic views over the banks of the Luangwa River. A beautiful camp of four traditional walk-in safari tents (1 of which is a two room family tent). Each has an en-suite bathroom made from natural materials, giving a unique décor. The bar and dining chitenje is central to the camp, and with the rest of the camp occupies an elevated stretch of river bank. The camp is positioned in a region renowned for some of the best game spotting in Zambia.

Mchenja Bush Camp 

Occupying a spectacular setting beneath a grove of ebony trees, Mchenja is an elegant, luxurious tented camp overlooking a bend in the Luangwa River. Frequently interrupted by elephants, the camp has a stunning central chitenje built around a fallen ebony and the camp’s plunge pool. The night game drives from here are usually very worthwhile.

Chinzombo 

Ultra-luxurious villas in the wild, Chinzombo is a safari camp like no other. Designed by award winning architects, the camp provides the ultimate in elegance and luxury without losing the bush feel. Spacious living areas, cooled sleeping areas, individual verandas, private plunge pools and massive en-suite bathrooms really make this a luxury resort in the wilderness. Situated in 60 acres of private land overlooking the Luangwa River front, winding footpaths connect the villas to the lounge/dining area. Each villa is equipped with Wi-Fi and there are yoga and exercise areas to compliment the spa facility.

Dining

Norman Carr Lodges pride themselves on the quality and range of food served, not only at the main lodge but also at the remote camps. Dining is almost colonial in its presentation, with early breakfasts, lavish brunch, afternoon tea & cakes and a 3 course dinner served, mostly under the stars, to your table at the end of the day. Such is the standard of the meals Norman Carr Lodges even has its own cookbook so you can take home the delights you have tasted.

Experience the bush on foot, perhaps tracking lions or whichever wildlife you have heard the night before. Game drives both day and night.
